Journal Prompts for Reflection: Edna St. Vincent Millay Quote

In our world, where productivity and achievement are often valued above all else, it is easy to fall into the quagmire of overwhelm. The drive to do more, and accomplish more and BE more…it can lead to an exhausting pace that leaves little room for rest or reflection.

In her poem “First Fig,” Edna St. Vincent Millay captures this feeling with stark simplicity.

“My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends–It gives a lovely light!”

Journal Prompts for Reflection

In what areas of your life do you feel like you’re burning the candle at both ends? How does this pace impact your overall well-being?

How do you currently manage your energy levels throughout the day? Are there times when you push yourself too hard, and if so, why?

What are the most important things in your life that you want to pour your energy into? Are there activities or responsibilities that are draining your energy without adding value?

What are early signs of burnout for you? How do these signs manifest physically, emotionally and mentally?

How do you incorporate rest and recovery into your routine? What changes can you make to ensure you’re not burning out?

What gives your life a “lovely light”? How can you sustain this light without exhausting yourself?

What boundaries can you establish to protect your energy and prevent burnout? How can you communicate these boundaries to others effectively?

How do you define success, and does this definition encourage a sustainable or unsustainable pace? What changes can you make to align your success with a balanced life?

Balance is Key

Millay’s quote is a powerful reminder that while there is beauty in living intensely, there is also a need for balance. The goal is not to stop burning brightly; but to do so in a way that preserves your inner light over the long term.
