How can one not be self aware if one is aware, at all? Conundrum. But this isn’t the article for that, so instead we answer “what is self awareness?”
Why Even Think About Being Self Aware?
If we asked 10 people how self aware they believe themselves to be, what kind of answers would we get? Now I haven’t done an actual scientific study on this, but in my own experience it seems that most people are less self aware than they believe.
Example: I went to an active listening class with a co-worker. The co-worker said something along the lines of: “I AM an empathetic listener! I always listen to Jane when she complains about her silly problems.” Oof. Only upon reflection was the coworker able to see that she wanted to be empathetic and she was trying to be empathetic. But she was not empathetic. Everyone in the room knew this, but she wasn’t aware. Also reference the “AITAH” threads on social media.
It takes work to see where we really are as opposed to where we are trying to be.
You’re right. I didn’t answer the question. Why care about self awareness?
Cause Science Says.
The history of every branch of science has cared. There is a copious amount of thought documented on the concept. If that’s not your jam, let’s throw all of the science for a minute and just simplify.
For an individual human in an every day life, self awareness is simply being attuned to your thoughts and emotions. And then, using that knowledge to choose your actions. My scientific recommendation: put yourself in time out regularly, think about your actions and reflect on why you react to things in specific ways.
We also don’t need to read all the science to come to the conclusion that when a human chooses an action it leads to better well-being. Our Moms taught us that, right? And if it wasn’t true, would we desperately need experienced therapists in society?
You Are Now A Scientist!
You have passed the course. Congratulations! You are a scientist. As a scientist, how do you decide if the previous hypothesis was correct? Is being self aware important?
You experiment, of course.
Experiment Away…
What are some simple ways to experiment with self awareness in daily life you ask?
*Start your day with mindfulness. Breathe deeply and set positive intentions. Acknowledge your thoughts and feelings without judgement.
*Keep a journal to record your thoughts and emotions. Gain insight into patterns and triggers.
*Welcome feedback from others. Use it as an opportunity for self-reflection and growth.
*Meditate throughout the day to stay present and mindful.
*Be aware of your emotional triggers and respond thoughtfully.
*Practice active listening in conversations to deepen connections.
*Take time to evaluate options before making important decisions.
*Recognize the mind-body connection and pay attention to physical sensations.
*Cultivate gratitude by focusing on the positive aspects of life.
*Reflect on your day before bed, acknowledging accomplishments and setting intentions for the next day.
Bask In Self Awareness…
Integrating a focus on self awareness into daily life can be transformative. By embracing concepts like mindfulness, self reflection, and self compassion we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
Start small, be patient with yourself and remember that being self aware is always there, you just have to tune in!
