Finding Beauty in Everyday Moments: Embracing October’s Delights

October is a month of reflection for me. It’s a time when the world is shifting from the energetic buzz of summer, to the comforting embrace of fall. There’s a certain sadness, or melancholy, that comes with saying goodbye to the sunshine and the heat of summer, but October brings its own kind of joy–a coziness that wraps around you like a well-worn sweatshirt.

This October marks seven years since I came close to losing my life–a milestone that reminds me every day of the beauty and gift of these “bonus” years I’ve had. These years have been filled with rediscovery, love, and the creation of a life that sparkles with joy. Each day, I try to find something beautiful in the ordinary, something that makes me smile and fills my heart with gratitude.

As October unfolds, it’s the perfect time to engage in activities that bring warmth and joy into life. Here are some ideas to help you savor the simple delights of this month. Pick at least one and make it happen. Invest time in yourself, noticing all the beauty that surrounds you.

  • Visit a pumpkin patch: Immerse yourself in the colors and scents of fall. Whether you take home a pumpkin, or just sip an apple cider, pumpkins are a quintessential symbol of October.
  • Find and visit a seasonal farmer’s market: Support local farmers and stock up on the freshest produce. Make it a point to cook with seasonal ingredients. Nourish your body and your soul.
  • Host a pumpkin carving party: Gather friends and family for creativity. Nothing beats the joy of creating together.
  • Create a fall decoration for your home: Whether it’s a handmade wreath, a centerpiece, or just a cozy corner with a new blanket, let your home reflect the warmth of fall.
  • Craft with fall foliage: Collect colorful leaves or fallen branches and turn them into art projects with your favorite little ones. It’s a great way to connect with nature and create memories.
  • Roast Pumpkin Seeds: After carving your pumpkins, don’t let those seeds go to waste. Roasting them is easy, and they make a delicious and healthy snack.
  • Make S’mores: Nothing says cozy like the warmth of a fire and the gooey goodness of s’mores. Whether indoors or out, it’s a treat that brings out the kid in all of us.
  • Try a recipe with fresh pumpkin: Explore the versatility of pumpkin in your kitchen. From soups to pies, there are many ways to enjoy this seasonal delight.
  • Make Your Favorite Soup: As the weather starts to cool, there’s nothing more comforting than a warm bowl of soup. Try a new recipe or perfect your favorite recipe.
  • Do some baking: Bake an apple pie, knead some sourdough bread, or whip up a batch of fresh biscuits. The aroma alone will be worth the effort.
  • Celebrate Halloween: Delight the neighborhood children with candy, decorations, and costumes. It’s a time to embrace fun and let your imagination run wild.
  • Eat Your Favorite Treats: 30 snack size candy bars feels more acceptable than one regular size. Treat yourself to a sweet indulgence. October is a month of simple pleasures, and candy is definitely one of them.
  • Create a Favorite Fall Drink: Whether it’s a pumpkin spice latte or a spiced chai, crafting your own seasonal drink is a small way to treat yourself.
  • Dress up for Halloween (or for a dinner on Tuesday): Who says getting dressed up is only for kids? Embrace the playful spirit of Halloween, or simply dress up for the fun of it!
  • Plant fall flowers: Start preparing for the spring by planting bulbs now. Try a bed of tulips. It’s a hopeful act, promising beauty in the seasons to come.
  • Take a walk through a park: Enjoy the crisp air and vibrant colors of fall. Bring a picnic and make a day of it.
  • Make your own apple cider or apple wine: Get creative in the kitchen and brew up something delicious. It’s a fun way to celebrate the harvest season.
  • Go to fall festivals: Embrace the local culture and enjoy festivals. From apple picking to hay rides, fall festivals offer a bit of everything.
  • Visit a Ceramic Cafe or plan another artistic endeavor: Paint a new coffee mug or other piece of pottery. This is a relaxing way to spend a couple of free hours, and you’ll have something to take home!
  • Plan a home spa day: Treat yourself to some self-care. A little pampering goes a long way in making you feel refreshed and revitalized.
  • Start a gratitude journal: Reflect each day on the simple delights you are thankful for. It’s a powerful practice that can shift your perspective and bring more joy into your life.
  • Go stargazing: October skies are often clear and crisp, making it a perfect time to lay under the stars and enjoy the beauty.
  • Read a cozy mystery or a classic novel: Curl up with a good book that fits the season’s mood.
  • Create a fall playlist: Compile your favorite songs of the moment and let the music set the tone of your days.
  • Decorate your porch: Add a touch of autumn to your entryway with pumpkins, mums and a new welcome mat.
  • Volunteer at a local charity: Giving back is a wonderful way to connect with your community and spread joy.
