Start a Gratitude Journal

Stress is rampant in today’s society. The fast-pace that time moves in makes it easy to forget the simple joys that we experience each day. Starting a gratitude journal is a powerful way to cultivate a positive mindset, improve well-being and appreciate the beautiful moments in life.

How to Start a Gratitude Journal

  1. Choose Your Journal: Select a journal or notebook you love (or a simple notes app on your mobile device). The key is to make it a place where it is convenient and accessible for expressing your gratitude.
  2. Set a Routine: Dedicate a specific time each day to write in your gratitude journal. It could be in the morning, before bed, or during a break at work. Consistency is essential for reaping the benefits of the practice.
  3. Start Small: Begin with writing down just one or two things that you’re grateful for each day. As you get more comfortable, you can expand the list.
  4. Be Specific: Instead of writing generic statements like “I’m grateful for my family,” try to find detailed moments to record. Example: “I’m grateful for the cozy family dinner that we had tonight.”
  5. Reflect on Your Day: Take a moment to reflect on the day and identify moments, people, or things that brought joy or meaning to your life.

Prompts to Start:

What kinds of focus can one find to be grateful for each day?

  • Nature’s Beauty–“Today I’m grateful for the beautiful sunset that painted the sky in shades of orange and pink. It made me take some deep breaths and focus on feeling grateful for the safety of my environment.”
  • Acts of Kindness–“Today I am grateful for the stranger who helped me find my dog. It was an act of kindness that brightened my day.”
  • Personal Growth–“Today I’m grateful for the project progress at work. We are meeting milestones and I feel pushed to learn and grow and make this project outcome successful.”
  • Family Moments–“Today I am grateful for the sound of toddler laughter. Hearing Junior laugh made me remember that I sometime take things too seriously.
