Flourishing is a core concept in positive psychology, representing a state where individuals experience optimal functioning and well-being. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, suggesting that to flourish is to thrive in all aspects of life. Modern psychology defines flourishing as a holistic approach to mental health, where a person not only feels good but also functions effectively in life.
Flourishing and Aristotle’s Eudaimonia
the concept of flourishing in positive psychology shares similarities with Aristotle’s notion of Eudaimonia. For Aristotle, Eudaimonia is the highest human good, often translated as “flourishing” or “well-being.” Both concepts emphasize living a life that fulfills one’s potential and purpose. However, while Aristotle focused on virtue and rationality as the path to flourishing, modern positive psychology broadens this to include emotional and social well-being as integral components.
Tracing the Path of this Belief
Study of Aristotle’s eudaimonia shows the evolution of the idea. For me, following from philosophy into positive psychology was the way to understand this concept.
